Antibiotics

Antibiotics are a group of drugs used to treat and prevent bacterial infections. This drug works by killing and preventing bacteria from multiplying in the body. Antibiotics cannot be used to treat infections caused by viruses, such as flu.

Basically, a relatively benign bacterial infection can heal on its own, so antibiotics are useless. However, when the bacterial infection does not improve, your doctor may prescribe antibiotics. In addition to the severity of the disease, several antibiotics must be taken into account before the patient finally receives antibiotics, namely:

  • Infection is a contagious infection.
  • Feeling restless and seems to take a long time to heal on its own.
  • High risk of complications.

The use of antibiotics must be recommended by a doctor. The doctor will adjust the dosage according to the patient's condition, indicating the elements that must be taken into account before and during drug use, as well as the side effects that may be caused by the use of antibiotics.

Avoid using antibiotics without doctor's advice, especially for:

  • Pregnant and nursing mothers.
  • Currently under other treatments.
  • Have a history of allergy to antibiotics.

Antibiotics can also be given as a preventative measure against bacterial infections or in the medical world called prophylaxis. People who receive antibiotics for prophylaxis are at high risk of bacterial infection, for example when they undergo glaucoma surgery or joint replacement.
