Causes of Gallstones

The appearance of gallstones is thought to be due to an imbalance in cholesterol and chemical compounds in the bile. Crystal flakes that are formed will develop into stone and mostly in a while in years.

Stockpiling of chemical compounds that are mostly found in gallbladder while the following stones are formed are cholesterol and bilirubin (waste originating from the destruction of red blood cells). Nearly 80% of cholesterol-based gallstones and about 20% are bilirubin-based. Bilirubin is a pigment found in bile.

The size of gallstones that are formed also varies. Some are as small as grains of sand and available as big as pingpong balls. Likewise with the amount. There are people who only have one stone and more are available.

The possibility of gallstones is different for each person. Specifically, women are twice as risky as men. Especially women who have been pregnant, taking birth control pills, or pursue high-dose hormone therapy.

In addition, the number of gallstones will increase for those who suffer from sickle anemia (sickle cell anemia). In patients with crescent anemia, red blood cells will be broken down continuously by the body, and the continuation is converted into bilirubin. This accumulation of bilirubin content can cause gallstones. A knowledge of research in the United Kingdom states that more than half of people suffering from crescent anemia will have complications forming gallstones.

The following are other factors that increase your risk for gallstones:

  •     Above 40 years old.
  •     Is pregnant.
  •     Having a family member along with the same disease.
  •     Frequently consume fatty or high cholesterol foods.
  •     Lack of fiber in the diet.
  •     Diabetics.
  •     Being overweight or obese.
  •     Patients with cirrhosis.
  •     People with digestive problems, if Crohn's disease and irritable bowel syndrome.
  •     People who take ceftriaxone, an antibiotic that can be used to cure pneumonia, meningitis, and gonorrhea.
  •     People who experience drastic weight loss.
