Diagnosis of Insomnia
To determine the diagnosis of insomnia, the doctor will first ask the patient:

  • Medical conditions encountered.
  • Environmental conditions around the residence.
  • Emotional and psychological conditions
  • Patient history or sleep schedule.

Information about a number of these elements can help doctors determine the underlying cause of insomnia. Patients will also be asked to record their sleep and wake up for several weeks so that the doctor can know the patient's sleep patterns. If necessary, the doctor will take blood samples to look for possible sleep disorders due to medical conditions encountered.

If the cause of insomnia is unknown or if there are other symptoms of sleep disturbance, such as restless leg syndrome or sleep apnea, the doctor will advise the patient to do a polysomnographic test. In a polysomnographic test, the doctor attaches electrodes to the patient's crown, temple, and chest. The machine that is connected to the electrodes will record a number of activities of the patient's body during sleep, including brain waves, heart rate, and blood pressure.

The experts determine a number of criteria for diagnosing insomnia. Among them, the grieving felt dissatisfaction in their sleep, both in quality and quantity. This condition is characterized by one or more of the following symptoms:

  • Difficulty when you want to sleep.
  • Often wake up in the middle of sleep or difficulty falling asleep after waking up.
  • Woke up too early and could not go back to sleep.

Other criteria for determining insomnia are:

  • Sleep disturbance causes disturbances in various areas of the patient's life.
  • At a minimum, sufferers have trouble sleeping 3 nights a week. This condition lasts at least 3 months.
  • The patient still has difficulty falling asleep, despite the time needed to sleep.
  • Insomnia is not related to other sleep disorders.
  • Sleep disorders are not caused by physiological effects of drug use or consumption.
  • Dissatisfaction in sleep is not related to mental disorders or health problems encountered.
