Liposuction, this is what you need to know

Liposuction is a surgical procedure performed to remove unwanted body fat. Liposuction is generally used to maintain body shape, but sometimes also to treat certain health conditions.
The requirement for liposuction is a person must have an ideal body weight or about 30% of ideal body weight. In addition, someone who wants to do liposuction must also have a firmer and elastic skin and not smoke.
Liposuction indications

Liposuction can be done to reduce the accumulation of fat attached to the skin and is useful for:
  • Improve your body shape by removing fat clots that cannot be lost by adjusting your diet and exercise.
  • Aesthetic reasons, for example, want to get rid of a double chin or a pile of fat in the stomach.
  • Improve sexual function by reducing the accumulation of fat on the inner thighs, making it easier to access the vagina.

In addition, liposuction can also be used to treat several conditions, such as:
  • Axillary Bromhidrosis. The appearance of body odor due to interactions between sweat glands and armpit bacteria.
  • Axillary hyperhidrosis. Excessive sweating in the armpits.
  • Hematoma. Hematoma is blood that accumulates outside the blood vessels and is not absorbed by the body.
  • Lipoma Lipoma is a mass of fat that develops under the skin.
  • Madelung's disease. The disorder is indicated by symmetrical fat deposits on both sides of the upper body, neck, arms, and legs due to genetic disorders.
  • Pseudogynecomastia. Breast enlargement in men is caused by fat accumulation, not due to enlargement of the mammary glands.

Contraindicated against liposuction

Liposuction or liposuction is performed for patients who are generally in good health, especially heart and lung function, and who do not have the disease. Some conditions that are not recommended for liposuction include:
  • Someone who regularly consumes anticoagulants or antiplatelet agents (such as aspirin) and who should not be stopped for a period of time, such as patients with a history of heart valve replacement, heart rhythm disorders (atrial fibrillation)), deep venous thrombosis or pulmonary embolism.
  • New patients on a low calorie diet.
  • You have a history of heart disease, diabetes, or immune system disorders.
  • Unhealthy obesity, which is obesity which disrupts physical activity and can cause other more serious illnesses such as stroke, diabetes, and sleep apnea. Liposuction in these circumstances is still debated between the benefits and risks that can cause death.

Liposuction is not a procedure that aims to lose weight instantly without adjusting your diet and exercise, especially as the main treatment for obesity. So, if your expectations are too high for liposuction, it is recommended not to do liposuction.

Before liposuction

The doctor will check your medical history, conduct a physical examination, and evaluate the psychological state of the patient. From preparation to liposuction, patients are advised to be accompanied by family or loved ones. One day before the procedure, blood and urine will be examined to determine the potential complications that may occur. The doctor will also take pictures of the parts of the body that will be done liposuction, for comparison before and after the action.

Here are some things to consider when you see a doctor before doing liposuction or liposuction:
  • Let your doctor know if you are allergic to certain drugs.
  • If you take any medicine, including supplements and herbs, talk with your doctor. Anticoagulants must be stopped 2 weeks before liposuction.
  • Tell your doctor if you have a history of certain diseases such as blood flow disorders, diabetes, heart disease or a weakened immune system.
  • Telling a certain lifestyle, such as smoking or just following a strict diet, is very low in calories.
Types of liposuction methods

In general, liposuction uses a device in the form of thin tubes or cannulas that are connected to suction or vacuum. The types of liposuction based on fat-breaking techniques are:

Tumescent liposuction. The most commonly used liposuction technique is injecting tumescent solution into body fat to be aspirated. This tumescent solution facilitates fat aspiration, while minimizing pain and reducing bleeding. A tumescent solution is a saline solution or saline solution mixed with epinephrine and lidocaine.
  • Liposuction with the help of ultrasonic (UAL). This technique uses sound wave energy under the skin to break down fat walls. In addition, fat will melt and facilitate suctioning.
  • Laser Assisted Liposuction (LAL). Laser light is used to produce a series of energy that melts fat.
  • Super wet technique. This technique is similar to tumescent liposuction, but only a few tumescent solutions are used. The amount of solution injected is adjusted to the amount of fat to be sucked. This technique is faster, but requires administration of anesthesia or general anesthesia.
  • Assisted Liposuction: Uses a special form of canulla that is reduced by rapid vibrations to destroy fat cells. The advantage of this technique is that the incision is quite small and does not damage the surrounding tissue.

Liposuction procedure

The liposuction procedure is very dependent on the liposuction method used and the amount of fat that is sucked. However, in general, here's how liposuction works:
  • Local or general anesthesia depends on the suction technique chosen and the amount of fat that must be removed.
  • Liposuction and cannula (suction tube with sharp edges) are used for this procedure.
  • The doctor makes a small incision to insert the cannula into the skin that contains fat. Gather fat then aspirated with a pump or large syringe.
  • Some punctures on the skin may be needed to suck up fat over a wider area. The doctor will also push the suction in different directions or angles to reach an effective suction path.
  • A small tube will be placed in the area of the newly aspirated fat. This tube is used to drain fluid and blood that will be collected a few days after the procedure.

The duration of the liposuction procedure varies depending on the liposuction technique used. Usually, this procedure lasts 1 to 3 hours.

After liposuction
The doctor will wrap the bandage or elastic in the area of liposuction to reduce swelling, bruising, and bleeding, and maybe maintain the shape of the body area that is pulled by fat. Elastic bandages or corsets will be used for 2 weeks, but elastic bandages can sometimes be removed, for example when swimming.

The patient will feel pain, tingling or numbness in this area of the body. Liposuction is also caused by bruising and swelling in the body area. This condition can be felt by patients for 5 to 10 days. The patient will receive anti-inflammatory medication to relieve pain and swelling. Doctors can also give antibiotics to reduce the risk of infection.

Patients generally recover fully after 2 weeks, but can resume their activities several days after liposuction. Patients are advised to avoid exhausting activities for 4 weeks after liposuction. The results of liposuction may not appear until 6 months after liposuction, after the swelling of the area is completely gone

The need for hospitalization after liposuction depends on the amount of fat extracted, the type of anesthesia and complications that occur. Patients who are allowed to go home after liposuction are not allowed to drive themselves.

Risk or side effects of liposuction
Possible risks of the liposuction procedure are:
  • Bacterial infection with streptococcus or staphylococci.
  • Bleeding.
  • Shock because the body lacks fluids during surgery.
  • Formation of fluid-filled bags under the skin.
  • Oily emboli, which is fat released and carried by the blood, cause blockages in the blood
  • Uneven skin surface.
  • Side effects and allergic reactions to anesthesia or anesthesia.
  • Numbness around the skin.
  • Damage to nerves, blood vessels, muscles, lungs and abdominal organs.
