Malaria diagnosis
When the patient comes for treatment with symptoms of malaria, the doctor will ask for a history of these symptoms and will do a physical examination. The doctor will also ask if the patient lives in an area where there are many cases of malaria or whether he has just been there.
To determine whether a patient has a malaria infection, the doctor will do a blood test called a rapid malaria diagnostic test (RDT malaria). The purpose of TDR in malaria is to detect proteins (antigens) that may be a sign of the presence of malaria parasites. The results can be known in minutes.
To confirm malaria, it is not enough to be satisfied with a rapid diagnostic test. It is also important to check blood under a microscope, detect the presence of parasites and distinguish between types of malaria. Blood samples can be taken more than once and when complaints arise.
Doctors can also do other blood tests, such as liver or kidney function tests, to determine whether malaria causes complications for other organs.
