Recognize the causes of gallbladder polyps and how to treat them

Gallbladder polyps are small tissue growths that protrude in the inner lining of the gallbladder. Although in most cases, benign (non-cancerous) gallbladder polyps, they do not exclude the growth of malignant polyps (cancer).

Gallbladder polyps can be accidentally discovered during an examination for an illness or other health problem. The size of the polyp found will determine its handling and possible growth characteristics.

The cause of the emergence of gallbladder polyps is not known with certainty, but various factors can increase the risk of this polyp formation, namely:

  • age
  • type
  • obesity
  • Diabetes
  • Congenital polyposis syndrome
  • Chronic hepatitis B

Although gall bladder polyps usually do not show specific symptoms, some patients may complain of nausea, vomiting, and pain in the right upper abdomen (hypochondrium).

How to treat gall bladder polyps

Treatment of gall bladder polyps will be adjusted according to size. When a polyp is found in a patient's gallbladder, the doctor will ask questions about the patient's complaints and medical history and will carry out a complete physical examination. After that, the doctor will do an ultrasound to determine the location and size of the polyps, as well as a scanner to distinguish polyps from cholesterol from adenomas or adenocarcinomas.

If the gallbladder polyp is small and its diameter is less than 1 cm, special care is usually not needed. However, doctors will arrange regular ultrasound to monitor the growth of polyps.

However, if the detected polyp has a diameter of more than 1 cm, the doctor will recommend surgery to remove the gallbladder, or cholecystectomy.

The following natural methods are also thought to help prevent and treat gall bladder polyps:

  • Avoid consumption of fried foods, fatty, and high cholesterol.
  • Avoid consumption of soft drinks,
  • Increase consumption of fruits, vegetables, foods containing omega-3 fatty acids, ginger and turmeric.

In addition, it is thought that consuming apple juice or olive oil on an empty stomach will help overcome gallbladder polyps. However, there are no studies that confirm its effectiveness.

Although gall bladder polyps are rare and are usually found accidentally, you should be aware of this condition. If you have the above risk factors, you should consult a doctor so that you can be examined and treated if necessary.
