Treatment of malaria

Treatment of malaria involves the administration of antimalarials to eliminate parasites. The type and duration of drug administration depends on the type of parasite being attacked, the severity of the symptoms, and the patient's condition.
To combat malaria caused by Plasmodium falciparum, the World Health Organization (WHO) has developed a multi-drug regimen, Artemisinin-Based Combination Therapy (ACT). This combination of drugs is:

  • A combination of artemether and lumefantrine
  • A combination of artesunate and amodiakuin
  • A combination of dihydroartemisinin and piperaquine
  • A combination of artesunate, sulfadoxin and pyrimethamine

This medicine is given at least 3 days for adults and children. Whereas for first trimester pregnant women, the drugs given are quinine pills and clindamycin for 7 days.

For the treatment of malaria due to Plasmodium vivax infection, a combination of ACT or chloroquine can be given. In addition, to prevent this recurrence of malaria, doctors can add primaquine-based drugs.

For severe malaria, patients will be hospitalized and given drugs by injection, at least for the first 24 hours. In addition, the drug can be made into tablets.
