Be careful, these 3 things can cause sudden death in infants
For those under the age of 1 a lot of sleep and long frequency. However, you must know the cause of sudden infant death syndrome, or Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), which is often associated with sleep.
SIDS is a sudden, unexpected, and often unexplained, healthy death of a baby. Babies who die are less than 1 year old and generally fall asleep when they are sleeping.
Kaola, son of finalist Masterchef Indonesia and influence of Yulia Baltschun, experienced SIDS. Yulia said the 6-month-old boy was tempted to be transferred to the hospital after being found sleeping in a non-breathing condition, but his life was helpless.

The cause of sudden infant death
No one knows exactly what caused this sudden infant death. However, doctors suspect that several factors can be the cause.
One of the most likely causes of sudden infant death is abnormalities or defects in the baby's brain. This defect usually occurs in nerve tissue that controls how the baby breathes, heart rate, blood pressure, temperature and when the baby needs to wake up.
Even in this case, abnormal brain disease is not strong enough to be a factor in sudden infant death. On the basis of further research, the doctors concluded that babies have the opportunity to die suddenly if they experience a combination of these three things, namely:

- Babies with health problems: Babies born with congenital abnormalities, such as brain disorders or genetic diseases, have a higher risk of developing SIDS. Sometimes, baby health problems are not detected by health workers or their parents. Adults don't know whether their baby will die suddenly.
- Children under 6 months of age: At this age, the baby experiences a growth spurt, so he is still adapting to his own body. Data shows that babies who die of SIDS are usually between 2 and 4 months old.
- Environmental factors: sleeping on his stomach, the temperature around the bed is too hot and exposure to cigarette smoke during sleep can also be a cause of sudden infant death.
Besides the combination of the three elements above, other risk factors that can cause sudden infant death include:
- Mothers who smoke, drink alcohol and abuse drugs during pregnancy and after giving birth (breastfeeding).
- Premature babies born or low birth weight.
- Poor postnatal care.
- Babies with a family history of SIDS.
- Babies whose mothers are under 20 years old.
How to prevent sudden infant death?
There is no 100% guarantee that your baby will be free of SIDS. However, there are ways to minimize the risk of sudden infant death.
Here are 10 steps to prevent SIDS as recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics.
- Let the baby sleep on her back
Do not lay your baby on his stomach, including on his side (because he can turn on his stomach). Make sure the baby sleeps on his back, not in a stroller, car seat, baby seat or swing for a long time.
Babies do not choke when sleeping on their backs. However, if you are worried about this possibility, give a pillow on his head or contact your pediatrician.
- Get rid of objects around sleeping babies
Make sure the baby sleeps without any objects that can interfere with breathing, such as blankets, toys, bolsters, or even large pillows.
- Don't smoke around the baby
Smoking during pregnancy increases the risk of babies being born with the possibility of contracting SIDS. This also applies when babies become passive smokers at birth.
- Babies must sleep on their own mattress
Babies who share a room with parents tend to have SIDS. However, babies who sleep in the same bed as their parents are more likely to die suddenly.
- Feed the baby as often as possible
Direct breastfeeding will reduce the risk of SIDS by up to 50%.
- Vaccinating babies
Routine vaccination of infants also reduces the risk of SIDS by up to 50%.
- Remember to use lollipop
The use of pacifiers effectively reduces the risk of SIDS. However, also consider the negative effects of lollipops, for example, which cause confusion in baby's nipples.
- Use comfortable sleepwear
Don't pack too much baby. Wear clothes that dry sweat, avoid feeling hot, and make sure the room temperature is comfortable enough for babies.
- No need to use SIDS prevention tools
Devices intended to prevent SIDS, such as heart rate monitors and respirators, have not been clinically proven.
- Don't give honey to babies
Infants under one year can develop botulism and other bacteria if they consume honey. So, keep it away from honey and its byproducts.
If you are worried about SIDS in infants, do not hesitate to consult a competent doctor. Remember, your baby's safety is a top priority.
