Chickenpox in Prevention of Infant Symptoms

Smallpox is an infectious disease caused by the varicella zoster virus. This disease often occurs in children. However, this condition rarely occurs early as the appearance of a vaccine against smallpox in 1995. However, measles is still possible.

Babies cannot be vaccinated until they are at least 12 months old. Infants get smallpox if exposed to patients from other diseases. Children may also suffer from contracting smallpox mother. Infants who get chickenpox after birth (not while still in the womb), may have a serious illness.

Smallpox is very contagious. The disease is spread through direct contact with blisters, saliva, mucus or someone suffering. It can also spread through the air when someone coughs or sneezes. The symptoms of smallpox can start anywhere from 10-21 days after exposure.

A person goes through a disease when the eruption hasn't reached the surface of the skin. Smallpox will still be contagious, even until the rash is dry. This can take around 5 days or more. If the baby has smallpox, do not carry it in a crowded place, such as child care or other, for 7-10 days.
 
When to call a doctor?

If your baby is suspected of having smallpox, contact your doctor. Also be sure to tell your doctor if your baby has the following symptoms because these symptoms might indicate complications.

  • Fever up to 38.9 degrees Celsius
  • Rashes on one eye or both
  • the rash feels hot to the touch
  • extreme sleepiness
  • torticollis
  • cough
  • throw up
  • fast heart rate
  • difficulty breathing
  • muscle tremors

Because the cause of chickenpox is a virus, this disease is difficult to treat with antibiotics. However, if a bacterial infection occurs around the lamp, your doctor may prescribe antibiotics to help clean.

Prevent smallpox in infants

You can prevent bacterial infections from developing keeping baby's hands and nails neatly organized and not scratched. Make sure you don't rub your skin while bathing. Pat dry and reduce rash irritation. You can do this for the child to stay comfortable.

  1. Use calamine lotion to reduce itching
  2. Let the baby get lots of rest
  3. Make sure the baby is well hydrated
