Diagnosis of Heart Failure

The doctor will ask about the symptoms and other illnesses that the patient is experiencing. Then, the doctor will do an examination for signs of heart failure, such as swelling in the leg. The doctor will also check your heart rate with a stethoscope.

Diagnosis of Heart Failure

To confirm the diagnosis of heart failure, the doctor will conduct additional tests, such as:

  • Pulmonary x-ray, to detect an increase in heart size or accumulation of fluid in the lungs, which is common in patients with heart failure.
  • Electrocardiography, to record changes in the electrical activity of the heart during heart failure or to detect heart rhythm disorders that may be the cause of heart failure.
  • Echocardiography, to better see the structure of the heart organ using high frequency sound waves.
  • Blood tests to detect the type of protein that will increase in heart failure and to detect diseases that can cause heart failure.
  • CT scan or MRI of the heart, to get a more detailed picture of the state of the organ
  • Heart catheterization, to detect blockages in the heart arteries.
