Definition of the labyrinth

Labyrinthitis or an inner ear infection is usually caused by a virus or bacteria. This condition causes inflammation of the ear labyrinth and affects the balance of hearing and ear.

The symptoms of labyrinthitis are:

  • Feel that your environment or yourself moves
  • Being sick
  • Hearing disorders
  • Mild headache
  • Ringing in the ear (tinnitus)
  • Earache
  • Visual impairment or double vision

The cause

The labyrinth is caused by infection of the labyrinth of the ear. The labyrinth is the deepest part of the ear consisting of,

  • cochlea
  • Spiral cavities are used to transmit sound to the brain.
  • Vestibular system
  • The channels are filled with fluids that contribute to body balance.

Labyrinths usually occur with viral infections, such as colds or flu. Infection can spread from the chest, nose, mouth and respiratory tract to the inner ear. Meanwhile, labyrinthitis is caused by a bacterial infection and tends to affect children. Labyrinths can also develop in people with autoimmune diseases, when the immune system mistakenly attacks healthy tissue.

There is no specific test that can be done to diagnose labyrinthitis. The doctor can do an examination to check for the presence of:

  • Brain disease or heart disease
  • Head injury
  • Side effects of drugs or substances such as alcohol, tobacco or caffeine
  • trauma

treatment

The symptoms of labyrinthitis will usually disappear within a few weeks. Therapy that can be done is to drink lots of fluids, to avoid dehydration and to take drugs that help treat the symptoms. Many cases of labyrinthitis are caused by a viral infection. In this case, antibiotics will not help. Antibiotics can be used if the cause is a bacterial infection.
