Spondylolisthésis

Spondylolisthesis is a condition in which one of the vertebrae moves from its normal position and bends forward to cover the underlying bone. In general, spondylolisthesis occurs in the lower back.
In the absence of treatment, spondylolisthesis can suppress the spinal cord or nerve roots. This causes pain, numbness, or weakness in one or both legs. Sometimes, nerve stress can also make a person with spondylolisthesis unable to control his urination.

Spondylolisthesis symptoms

Spondylolisthesis does not always cause symptoms. So many patients do not feel the symptoms. Some of the symptoms of spondylolisthesis that are usually felt by patients are:

  • Your back is stiff and sensitive.
  • Feelings of numbness, tingling or pain that radiates from the lower back to the legs.
  • Hamstrings contract.
  • The spine is too curved.
  • Lower back pain.
  • Difficulty walking.
  • Poor urination control (urinary incontinence) or defecation (faecal incontinence).

It is best to seek medical attention immediately if you experience the following symptoms:

  • Persistent pain in the thigh or pelvis.
  • The backbone swells abnormally.
  • Pain or stiffness continues in the back.

Causes of spondylolisthesis

Based on the cause, spondylolisthesis can be divided into five types, namely:

  • Rhythmic spondylolisthesis, which is caused by repeated lesions of the spine,
  • Congenital spondylolisthesis. Spinal abnormalities at birth can move one bone forward.
  • Traumatic spondylolisthesis, which arises due to fracture of the spine, so that one bone moves forward.
  • Degenerative spondylolisthesis, due to aging.
  • Pathological spondylolisthesis. Bone disorders, one of which can be caused by a tumor.

Diagnosis and treatment of spondylolisthesis

To diagnose patients suspected of having spondylolisthesis, the doctor will usually do X-ray imaging on the back. Imaging results will show the part of the bone that is moved from its normal position or has cracks.

The steps that must be followed to treat spondylolisthesis depend on the symptoms experienced by the patient and their severity. There are two types of steps to treat spondylolisthesis, which are non-surgical and surgical.

Here are some examples of non-surgical spondylolisthesis that can be performed by a doctor:

  • Physiotherapy. Simple movements and stretching exercises to increase flexibility of the lower back and hamstrings muscles.
  • Corticosteroid injections around depressed nerves and spinal cord. It aims to reduce pain, numbness and tingling in the patient's feet.
  • Provides anti-inflammatory analgesics.
  • Suggest that patients avoid certain physical activities during certain times, such as bending, lifting, sports that involve physical contact and sports sports.

Surgery will be taken if the symptoms of spondylolisthesis are severe, if the spinal cord is stressed and if there are no more effective surgical treatment methods for the treatment of spondylolisthesis. During surgery, the doctor will remove bone or tissue to reduce pressure on the spinal cord, or return the bone to its normal position.

However, the side effects of surgery still exist. Spondylolisthesis patients who undergo surgery can experience complications such as:

  • Deep vein thrombosis, blood clots in leg veins.
  • Damage to the spinal cord, resulting in numbness and weakness in both legs, or even paralysis.
  • Infection at the operating site.
