Swaddling, dangerous or beneficial?
Mooring is a natural thing and has been used for a long time by some Indonesians. However, the question of whether a baby is needed or not is always controversial, because a baby being swaddled is associated with an incident of sudden infant death and injury.
McDonnel and Moon (2014) conducted research on the safety of baby bags and baby diapers from 2004 to 2012. There were 36 events related to the use of baby and swimming bags, including:
- 5 cases related to baby bags (cover to wear): 1 death, 2 injuries and 2 potential injuries.
- 18 cases related to nappy: 8 deaths, 10 potential injuries.
- 1 case of death, no product mentioned
- 12 deaths were related to cloth swaddling or blankets

Some facts related to cases of infant death using baby bags and instant nappies, namely:
- 8 out of 10 babies are found with instant nappies
- The age of the baby is 3 to 5 months and the average age is 3.5 months.
- In 80% of cases, the baby cannot breathe (asphyxia) due to the supine position, including the baby lying on his stomach or stomach while sleeping.
Cases that occur in infants wrapped in blankets / diapers include:
- 12 deaths were identified, with an average age of 2 months
- Babies were found dead due to lack of breathing: 1 baby slept in the stomach, 6 babies were fed stomach, 4 babies died due to the use of blankets / blankets / blankets / pillows and 1 baby died due to hyperthermia (too hot).
- 1 death was caused by covering a baby's mouth and nose with a cloth / blanket
This study has limitations in its research conception. However, this study reminds parents to use baby diapers properly. Injuries and even death can occur if the wrapped baby is not used carefully.
Tips for protecting your baby safely
If you choose to protect your baby, pay attention to the following things to prevent sudden infant death, such as SIDS, or an unwanted injury:
- Make sure the diaper is tight and tight, but not too tight. If you use cloth, make sure the folds are clean and do not remove the baby's face. Also make sure the baby's feet can still move freely. The use of diapers is that the baby does not make a myth of stretching baby's legs.
- Do not put the baby to the supine or supine position when swaddled. Sleep the baby in the supine position. It was found that the case of the baby died after falling asleep on his stomach. This may be due to limited baby movements, preventing the baby from lifting or rolling.
- Make sure the baby does not overheat when swaddled. Our community believes that babies are vulnerable to cold and needs to be wrapped in order to stay warm. It is not uncommon to find babies wrapped in layers of cloth. The higher the number of layers wrapped, the higher the risk of contracting hyperthermia. Benchmarks that can be used are observing and holding baby's skin. If the baby's skin is moist or wet, it means the temperature is too high.
- Don't become a member of your baby after 2 months of age. There are still no safe age guidelines for diapers, but avoid wrapping them if the baby has started to roll (about 3 months).
- Educate child caregivers (grandmothers or baby sitters) about safe practices of swaddling.
