This complication is caused by fetal growth retardation

What can happen if your fetus does not develop as expected? This condition is called fetal growth retardation (PJT) or intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR).

A fetus or newborn with PJT will appear smaller than a fetus or a baby of the same gestational age.

6 Complications of fetal growth retardation

Some complications before delivery, during delivery, and after delivery can occur in fetuses with delayed fetal growth.

At birth, the baby may be infected, even in some cases, death can occur. In addition, some complications can occur due to delayed fetal growth.

1. Caesarean section
Signs of cesarean delivery in a fetus with IUGR are usually due to the inability of the fetus to cope with stress during spontaneous labor.

2. Inhaling Meconium

Meconium is the first metabolic waste or green stool produced by the fetus in the womb. In cases of stress, the fetus can secrete meconium, which can be inhaled with amniotic fluid.

When this happens, the baby can develop pneumonia and even airway obstruction.

3. Preterm birth and low birth weight

A newborn has less weight at birth if it weighs less than 2,500 grams.

4. Hypoglycemia or hypoglycemia

Hypoglycemia is often temporary. But if left untreated, it can cause interference with the nervous system and brain.

5. Hypothermia or lower than normal body temperature
Hypothesis in infants with TJP, caused by low fat stores, and maintaining body heat. Therefore, as a general rule, babies born with TJP must be placed in a baby burner.

6. Eating disorders

In general, assistive devices are used in babies born with TJP to meet their nutritional needs.

7. Reducing physical growth, growth and development

Apart from the potential for physical growth and developmental abnormalities, babies born with TJP can usually catch up by the age of two.

Prevent the risk of delayed fetal growth by examining the uterus

If the fetus experiences severe TJP, several risks or complications can occur. However, routine prenatal examinations help avoid this problem, so doctors can quickly detect it to prevent complications of PJT.

If TJP is detected during routine prenatal examinations, the fetus will be closely monitored by increasing the frequency of prenatal and ultrasound (USG) examinations.

The examination is carried out to ensure that the fetus can continue its growth and development and prevent further potential disturbances.

Anticipate delay in fetal growth

Complications related to TJP can be prevented if pregnant women regularly do uterine examinations. During the examination, the doctor or midwife will screen PJT to prevent complications.

At 24 weeks' gestation, an ultrasonic machine can be used to detect baby's height. The latter will then be compared with the reference baby size at gestational age.

In addition, the ultrasound device can also detect placental disorders and an adequate amount of amniotic fluid.

Other screening tests, such as blood tests, amniotic fluid tests, and fetal stress tests (NST), are needed to rule out possible causes of TJP.

Always consult your pregnancy and have regular obstetric checks.
