Treatment for dementia

All cases of dementia cannot be recovered. Dementia treatment can be used to relieve symptoms and prevent complications. Treatment of dementia includes administration of drugs, therapy and surgery.

Treatment for dementia

drug

Some types of drugs commonly used to treat dementia symptoms are:

  • Acetylcholinesterase inhibitors, intended to relieve symptoms of mild Alzheimer's disease, wet body and hallucinations as a cause of dementia. Side effects that may be experienced include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and decreased heart rate. It is recommended to always monitor the condition of the heart through the ECG during treatment.
  • Memantine, to slow down chemical reactions in the brain. It is usually prescribed if acetylcholinesterase inhibitors do not help or if dementia has entered moderate severity. Possible side effects include dizziness, headaches, loss of balance, constipation and high blood pressure.
  • Antipsychotics, intended to relieve the patient's aggressive behavior or undergo serious agitation. These drugs are usually consumed in a short time to avoid the risk of side effects such as drowsiness, cardiovascular problems, communication difficulties, stiffness of the body, especially for people with dementia caused by the soft body.
  • Antidepressants, to relieve the symptoms of depression that usually occurs in people with dementia.

For symptoms that mimic dementia, the following supplements will be recommended:

  • Vitamin E, to slow down affection related to Alzheimer's disease and dementia. Vitamin E is usually consumed in low doses to avoid complications such as death, especially in people with heart disease.
  • Omega 3 Folic Acid Although more research is still needed, Omega 3 is thought to help reduce the risk of developing dementia.
therapy
Some psychological therapy is done to relieve the symptoms of dementia, such as:

  • Cognitive stimulation therapy and orientation to reality, to stimulate memory, problem solving skills, language skills, alleviate mental disorientation, to increase patient confidence.
  • Behavioral therapy, to suppress behavior that is not controlled because of depression or hallucinations.
  • Occupational therapy, which teaches patients how to do their daily activities safely and precisely, while explaining how to control their emotions and prepare for the development of further symptoms in progressive dementia.
  • Validation therapy shows empathy and understands the patient's condition so they don't suffer from depression. Although this can help reduce patient confusion and anxiety, validation treatments do not yet have sufficient evidence of its effectiveness.

In addition to the above therapies, there are also some supportive therapies that can be done at home, such as music therapy, aromatherapy, massage, pet games and art activities.

During the therapeutic process, it is strongly recommended to modify home furniture to facilitate the movement of people affected and to get rid of sharp objects so as not to put the patient in danger.

operation

In cases of dementia caused by brain tumors, brain injury or hydrocephalus, surgery may be recommended. If no permanent damage to the brain has occurred, surgery can help restore symptoms.
Treatment of other conditions
Conditions that trigger dementia, such as hypertension, diabetes, and cholesterol-related disorders, must be treated in a way that does not further damage the nerves or blood vessels. Lifestyle changes such as reducing alcohol consumption and stopping smoking can also help.
