Treatment of urinary tract infections

Treatment of urinary tract infections
Urinary tract infections can usually be treated with antibiotics. The type of medication prescribed depends on the patient's health condition and the type of bacteria present in the urine.

Some types of antibiotics that are usually used for urinary tract infections are phosphomycin, nitrofurantoin, trimethoprim and ceftriaxone. In some cases, fluoroquinolone antibiotics, such as ciprofloxacin and levofloxacin, will be used if there is no alternative. But as a rule, this type of antibiotic is avoided because its side effects exceed the benefits that can be achieved.

Usually, the symptoms disappear after several days of antibiotic treatment. However, antibiotic treatment must be continued until the end. It is important that patients follow medical treatment according to doctor's instructions.

Doctors recommend the use of low-dose antibiotics every day for 6 months or more for patients with recurrent urinary tract infections. Whereas in urinary tract infections related to sexual activity, doctors will prescribe antibiotics for consumption after sex. The doctor will also recommend other contraceptive methods, such as birth control pills, to patients who use condoms with spermicide lubricants.

In severe infection conditions, the patient will be hospitalized with antibiotic injection.
Prevention of urinary tract infections

Urinary tract infections can be prevented by doing the following:

  • For women, clean it from front to back after defecating or urinating. This step prevents bacteria around the rectum or rectum from infecting the vagina and urethra.
  • Drink lots of water to increase the frequency of urination. It is better to drink large amounts of water after intercourse. This will trigger urination and expel bacteria that can enter the urethra during intercourse.
  • For women who are sexually active, tell your partner not to use condoms lubricated with spermicide.
  • Use loose cotton underwear to keep the vaginal area and urinary hole dry.
  • Avoid cleaning women who can cause irritation.
  • Clean the genitals before having sex
