Why do babies need BCG vaccination?

BCG vaccination is one of the immunizations to be given to babies. Its function is to prevent tuberculosis or what is now called tuberculosis.
BCG is an extension of Bacillus Calmette-Guerin. In Indonesia, BCG immunization in infants is usually for neonates and is recommended at 3 months of age.
For babies who will be vaccinated with BCG after 3 months of age, a tuberculin test must be done first. Tuberculin test (Mantoux test) is done by injecting tuberculosis (antigen) germ protein into the skin layer of the upper arm. The skin will react to antigens if you have been exposed to TB germs. The reaction is a red bump on the skin in the injection area.

Prevent TB

The BCG vaccine is made from weak TB bacteria and will not make TB vaccine recipients contract. The bacterium used is bovine mycobacterium, which is most similar to the bacteria that cause tuberculosis in humans. Giving this vaccine will encourage the immune system to produce cells that can protect us from TB bacteria. BCG vaccination is very effective in preventing TB, including the most dangerous type of TB meningitis in children.

Tuberculosis is not only at risk of lung infections, but also can attack other parts of the body such as joints, bones, brain walls (meningen) and kidneys. TB is very dangerous and spread easily through splashes of saliva, sneezing or coughing, which is inadvertently inhaled by others.

Although it is almost similar to the way flu or flu is spread, TB usually requires a longer contact time before it can be obtained. As a result, family members who live at home with people with TB are more likely to contract it.

Side effects of BCG vaccination

After being vaccinated, there is no need to panic if it blisters at the injection site. Not infrequently the wound hurts and bruises for several days.

After 2 to 6 weeks, the injection site can reach almost 1 cm in height and harden due to liquid on a dry surface. Then he will leave a small scar. Some people may have more severe scars, but usually they recover after a few weeks.

BCG very rarely causes side effects in the form of anaphylactic allergic reaction. But it is better to prevent things that are not desirable if allergies occur. To find out the dangerous side effects, vaccination must be done by a doctor or a licensed doctor, who knows the right allergy treatment.

What to look for before BCG vaccination

Doses of 0.05 ml BCG immunization in infants under one year of age. As a general rule, BCG vaccination is done in the upper arm. This arm may not receive another vaccine for at least three months.

Although classified as mandatory immunization, there are several conditions in infants that make BCG immunization need to be delayed, such as:
  • High fever.
  • Skin infections.
  • HIV positive, and have not received treatment.
  • Cancer treatment or other conditions that weaken the immune system.
  • Anaphylactic reactions are known to be BCG immunization.
  • Have been exposed to TB or have lived with someone with TB.

BCG vaccination is an important step to protect baby's health. However, pay attention to the baby's condition before being vaccinated. If necessary, consult with your pediatrician for the best solution.
