Low birth weight babies (LBW) are born with a low weight than the average weight of the baby. Reported to LBW infants if it weighs less than 2.5 kg, whereas babies with normal weight more than 2.5 or 3 kg. While babies born weighing less than 1.5 kg are also very low birth weight.
FPN can occur when the baby is born prematurely with a gestational period of less than 37 weeks (not enough months), or the baby has developmental disorders in the uterus. According to the Ministry of Health of the Indonesian Research Agency in 2014, around 10 percent of babies born with low birth weight, and this number is most prominent in Central Sulawesi, which is 17 percent.

- Thin.
- A little more body fat.

FPN is often born prematurely. The problems that are often faced in these babies are:
- Have high levels of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia).
- Having problems in dieting.
- Has a weight barrier.
- Difficulty in maintaining body temperature and keeping warm below normal temperatures.
- Having too many red blood cells that make the blood too thick (polycythaemia).
Causes of low body weight at birth
Many conditions cause babies to be born with a low weight. The main causes and premature births are the most common, births that occur before 37 weeks' gestation. premature babies do not need to experience the strongest growth in the last trimester of pregnancy. Therefore, these babies tend to have low weight and small size.
Besides premature birth, other conditions that can create a risk of babies born with low births are to the west:
- Growth intrauterine restriction. In this condition, the baby does not develop properly in the womb. This problem can be triggered by disorders of the placenta that inhibit the growth of the baby because of the supply of oxygen and nutrients.
- Complications during pregnancy, such as pregnant women experiencing high blood pressure.
- The fetus has a congenital medical condition.
- Twin. The twins are often born with low birth weight and premature because there is plenty of room for two fetuses in the uterus.
- young mother's age. Pregnant women under 15 years have a high risk of having a baby
- pregnant women who are malnourished.
- Pregnant women who use drugs or alcohol.
- Pregnant women have emotional problems during pregnancy.
