The main treatment against fungal infections of the skin is to use antifungals, especially topical antifungals, such as creams or ointments. Antifungal drugs work by destroying fungal cell walls so that cell contents come out and fungal cells die, or by preventing fungal cells from multiplying and multiplying.

Some types of antifungal drugs commonly used to treat fungal infections of the skin:
  • Topical antifungal (topical) - applied directly to the skin, hair or nails.
