Lazy Eyes
Lazy eye or amblyopia is a vision problem in children because the brain and eyes are not connected properly, which results in vision loss.
The existence of lazy eyes in children will cause the quality or focus of vision produced by the two eyes differently. The effect, the brain will only translate good eye sight and ignore the eye's vision is disturbed (lazy eye). If not handled properly, lazy eyes can become blind.
Lazy eyes usually appear from birth until the age of 7 years. In rare cases, this disease can affect both eyes.
Symptoms of lazy eyes
Children rarely know that they are blind or cannot explain it, so their eyes are lazy, even in conditions that are difficult to detect. Therefore, parents should be aware of the following symptoms and clinical signs:
If parents are aware of the symptoms of laziness, you should immediately see your child at an eye specialist.
Causes lazy eyes
Lazy eye occurs when the nerve connections of the eye to the brain are not formed properly in childhood. The blind eye will send blurred or wrong visual cues to the brain. Over time, the eye's performance becomes out of sync and the brain ignores evil eye signals.
Lazy eyes can occur in children triggered by various things. Some of them are:
In addition to the triggers above, several factors have the potential to increase the risk of lazy eye in children. Among others are:
Most children with lazy eyes do not realize that only one eye has vision problems, especially early childhood. Parents can judge whether a child has lazy eyes or not by paying attention to the lazy vision symptoms mentioned above. Parents can also do a simple test to determine whether their child is suspected of being lazy by alternately closing their eyes. In general, children will complain if what is covered is good eyes and will not complain if what is covered is lazy eyes. However, to determine whether a child has this disease or not, parents are strongly advised to see the child in the doctor's office.
During the child's examination, the doctor will check whether the eyes and eyesight are in good condition, namely:
Eye examination can be done routinely at the age of 6 months, 3 years and at school age to ensure the development of vision. If, at the time of the examination, the doctor suspects that the child has lazy eyes, treatment is started.
Lazy eye care
The severity of the lazy eye and its impact on a child's vision will determine the appropriate treatment steps. In general, if the lazy eye is diagnosed as early as possible, the cure rate is quite good. Treatment that starts at the age of children over 6 years has a lower success rate.
The principle of treatment of lazy eye is twofold, which involves forcing the use of lazy eye to see, or to treat conditions that cause this disease. Some treatments that will be recommended by doctors are:

- Those eyes don't work together.
- The eyes often move in or out (squinting).
- Children have difficulty estimating distances.
- One eye looks narrower than the other.
- Children often lean their heads to look better.
- Difficulty seeing objects in 3 dimensions.
- Poor vision test results.

Lazy eyes can occur in children triggered by various things. Some of them are:
- Crossed eyes (strabismus). This is the trigger for most lazy eyes. This disease is often hereditary in the family.
- Refractive disorders, namely the difference in refraction between the two eyes, make it possible to see eyes with clearer vision. Examples of refractive disorders are myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism.
- Cataracts in children. Cataracts cause lens calcification, which affects vision. If this only happens in one eye, can trigger lazy eyes in children.
- Injury to the cornea of the eye. Injury to the transparent layer on the front of this eye (corneal ulcer) can cause vision problems and trigger lazy eyes in children.
- The eyelids droop, because it's blocking
In addition to the triggers above, several factors have the potential to increase the risk of lazy eye in children. Among others are:
- Premature birth.
- Babies born under normal body weight.
- Hereditary factors, especially if there is a history of deep lazy eyes
- Impaired child development.

- Both eyes can also see.
- Nothing prevents light from entering the eye.
- The two eyes move simultaneously and in harmony with each other.

The principle of treatment of lazy eye is twofold, which involves forcing the use of lazy eye to see, or to treat conditions that cause this disease. Some treatments that will be recommended by doctors are:
- The use of glasses. In the beginning, most children refused to wear special glasses, lazy eyes, because they felt better without this tool. Parents are encouraged to always take care of their children so that they continue to use special glasses for lazy eyes so the treatment can work well.
- Using eye cache. This tool is attached to the normal eye to stimulate lazy eyes, so they experience development by seeing. Just like wearing glasses, at the beginning of the therapy period, children sometimes refuse to wear an eye patch because they feel uncomfortable to see it. This method is most effective for toddlers and eyebands which are usually worn for 2 to 6 hours a day. Treatment with an eye patch may be related to the use of glasses.
- Special eye drops, which can cover up normal eye sight. This will encourage children to use their lazy eyes. However, eye drops like this have the potential to trigger side effects such as eye irritation, skin redness and headaches.
- Surgery This procedure is recommended for treating cataracts and narrowed eyes, causing lazy eyes. This operation is usually done in a child's unconscious state after general anesthesia. After surgery, the child must be hospitalized as part of recovery. Although this might not improve visual ability 100 percent, the eyes will become more synchronous, so performance will also improve.
