Understand the difference between ketosis and ketoacidosis

The terms ketosis and ketoacidosis look similar, but these two terms have different conditions. So what is the difference between ketosis and ketoacidosis?

Apart from similar names, ketosis and ketoacidosis are two different medical conditions. Simply put, ketosis is a normal metabolic process that produces ketone compounds. Meanwhile, ketoacidosis is a condition of advanced ketosis that causes serious complications.
That is the difference between ketosis and ketoacidosis

You will find below other differences between ketosis and ketoacidosis:

Ketosis
Ketosis is a normal and harmless metabolic process. This condition occurs when the body lacks carbohydrates to be converted into energy. Instead, the body will burn fat to meet its energy needs. This process of fat metabolism will produce compounds called ketones.

In the case of ketosis, the levels of ketones in the blood and urine will be higher than usual, but this will not cause changes in pH or acidity of the blood.

Ketosis is usually caused by a low carbohydrate diet, a ketogenic diet, prolonged fasting and alcohol consumption.

Ketoacidosis

Ketoacidosis refers to the condition of diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), which is a serious complication of type 1 or type 2 diabetes mellitus. Ketoacidosis can occur quickly and is a serious condition that must be treated immediately. In this condition, ketone levels increase very strongly. This makes the blood too acidic and disrupts the function of organs such as the liver and kidneys.

Ketoacidosis is usually caused by diabetes mellitus with several other conditions, such as the use of insulin, infection, or an incorrect pregnancy. In addition, addiction and alcoholism can also trigger this condition.

Differences in the symptoms of ketosis and ketoacidosis

In addition to the causes, ketosis and ketoacidosis can also be distinguished from the symptoms, namely:

Symptoms of ketosis

Some of the symptoms of ketosis that may appear are:
  • Bad breath
One of the symptoms of ketosis is the appearance of a characteristic bad breath. This is caused by the production of ketonic and acetonic compounds during fat metabolism. Acetone is released by the body during urination and breathing produces a distinctive odor.
  • Get tired quickly
In the case of ketosis, your body will get tired quickly. This condition is common due to the loss of carbohydrates as an energy source.
  • Indigestion
Another symptom that can appear when the body is in a state of ketosis is the emergence of digestive problems, such as constipation or diarrhea.

Symptoms of ketoacidosis

Although the symptoms that can occur in people with ketoacidosis are:
  • Frequent urination
  • Being very thirsty
  • Stomach upset
  • The skin becomes dry
  • hard to breathe
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • confused
  • Loss of concentration
  • dehydrated

Overall, the difference between ketosis and ketoacidosis is evident from the causes and symptoms it causes. So don't distinguish the two. If you want more information about these two conditions, don't hesitate to ask your doctor.
