Get to know the hemangiomas and soft strawberries that stain baby's skin
Hemangiomas can be considered a "birthmark" in infants. The form of thick red bumps often make women panic because it looks creepy. But what is hemangioma in this baby?
Hemangiomas in a baby's body (hemangioma infantil) are a collection of blood vessels that develop under the baby's skin. This sign usually appears in newborns (congenital hemangiomas) until the age of one year.
The appearance of hemangiomas in infants is not only similar to strawberries
Based on its shape, hemangiomas can be divided into several types. The easiest feature is superficial hemangioma in the form of bright red mass like the surface of a strawberry.
In addition, there is also a deep hemangioma that is felt as part of a swollen body. But the surface of the skin is smooth and there is only one blue color that resembles a bruise.
Whereas the third type is mixed hemangiomas. As the name suggests, hemangiomas are a combination of the two types above.
So far, the cause of hemangioma growth is still a question mark. Some experts argue that there may be genetic factors involved, but this hypothesis still requires additional research.
It is clear that hemangiomas are more common in babies born premature, low weight or twin.
What are the symptoms of hemangiomas in infants?
Hemangiomas can be seen shortly after the baby is born. But in most cases, hemangiomas develop more often when the baby is several days to several months old.
Usually, babies only have one hemangioma. But do not exclude that there is more than one hemangioma en masse, especially in twins.
These birthmarks look like red spots on a baby's skin at an early stage and usually appear on the face, head, chest or back. These patches then develop into a type of hemangioma.
Can hemangiomas disappear?
As a child ages, hemangiomas will grow or widen. But you don't need to worry. Although it sounds like a tumor, hemangiomas are not cancer cells and will disappear or disappear by themselves.
However, it takes time for the hemangioma to completely disappear from the child's skin. About half of hemangioma cases actually heal when a child is between 5 and 10 years old. Unfortunately, in some cases, hemangiomas still leave scars that are younger than the surrounding skin.
In addition, the size of hemangiomas can also leave scars in the form of sagging skin. This scar can be removed surgically. But if you want to choose the path of surgery, consult a trusted doctor to make it safer.
Hemangiomas in babies can usually be recognized immediately when the doctor examines your child's condition. Even in this case, an MRI scan is sometimes needed to determine the extent to which hemangiomas affect the baby's internal organs.
The doctor will usually only act if the hemangioma is blocking vision (near the baby's eyes), kissing (near the nose) and hearing (near the ear). You can also contact your doctor directly if the baby's hemangioma bleeds or if an infection is observed.
