A recent study published in the journal Sleep, cited in Medical Daily, shows that snoring due to obstructive sleep apnea can accelerate the aging process.
This study shows that the habit of snoring every night makes a person's biological age 215 days higher than that shown on a KTP. Sleep disturbance is also associated with the onset of symptoms of premature aging up to 321 days beforehand.
The study was conducted on 622 men and women aged 69, on average, from various racial and socioeconomic backgrounds who snore during sleep. The research team examined blood DNA methylation and their sleep patterns.
DNA methylation is a genetic modification that regulates the activation or deactivation of genes in body cells. The process is influenced by genetic and environmental factors. Sleep patterns are measured by polysomnographic techniques to check breathing patterns, oxygen levels in the blood, heart rate, brain waves, and limb movements.
The results show that the worse your snoring, the faster your biological age will age due to damage to your body's cells.
The effect is more visible in women
Women who snore tend to experience biological aging faster than men. Two reasons explain this conclusion: women tend to have a major REM phase and episodes of obstructive sleep apnea that worsen during the REM phase.
The good news is that the effects of epigenetic changes can be reversed by first treating disorders or conditions that cause snoring during sleep. For example due to obstructive sleep apnea, dementia, cardiovascular disease and cancer.
Additional research is still needed
This study only revealed the relationship between snoring habits during sleep and accelerated cell aging.
Researchers have not yet studied the effects of sleep apnea treatment on preventing cell aging and reducing the risk of the resulting disease. The study also looked at only participants' sleep patterns for a day. This limit may be a gap for future research to design a more complete analysis.
It is hoped that further studies will consistently monitor participants' sleep patterns and include healthy individuals (never snoring and no triggers) for comparison.
