Learn Basophil White Blood Cell Information Here

Your body naturally produces several different types of white blood cells, one of which is basophils. White blood cells have important benefits for your body, for example to help fight infections by fighting bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites such as worms that attack the body

Blood is a liquid that provides nutrients, oxygen, and the disposal of waste or metabolic waste that circulates in your body. About half the volume of blood is made up of blood cells, which include red blood cells that carry oxygen to the tissues, white blood cells that fight infection, and platelets which help the blood to clot in the event of an injury.

This is the role of Basophil

The presence of white blood cells in your body turns out to have such an important role. White blood cells, also called leukocytes, are part of the immune system.

White blood cells originate from the bone marrow, but these white blood cells circulate throughout the bloodstream. There are five main types of white blood cells, namely neutrophils, lymphocytes, eosinophils, monocytes, and basophils.

Basophils are a type of white blood cells or leukocytes with rough bluish-black granules in the cytoplasm on a microscope appearance. In addition to blood, basophil cells are also present in body tissues which will be released at any time if there is an allergic or inflammatory reaction, which is useful against certain foreign bodies.

Basophils usually contain 0.5 to 3 percent of peripheral blood leukocytes, and contain histamine and serotonin. This is known as basophilic leukocytes.

Because it is part of the body's immune system, you need to be careful if your white blood cell counts or numbers soar or drop dramatically. Like basophils, if your basophils are low, it may be due to a severe allergic reaction occurring in your body. In some cases, having too much basophils can occur because you have certain blood cancers.

Benefits of basophils include:

  •     Prevents blood clots
Basophils contain heparin, which is a natural blood-thinning agent.
  •     Mediate allergic reactions
In allergic reactions, the body's immune system is exposed to allergens (allergens). Basophils are also thought to play a role in producing antibodies in your body, called immunoglobulin E (IgE). These antibodies then bind to basophils and mast cells. These cells release substances such as histamine and serotonin. Furthermore, these cells mediate the inflammatory response in areas of your body that are affected by allergens as a form of body resistance to foreign objects.

This Causes Changing Basophil Levels

Some things that can cause basophil levels in your body to surge up, including:

  •     Hypothyroidism
This condition occurs when your thyroid gland does not produce enough thyroid hormone. If your thyroid hormone is low, it can cause your body's metabolic function to slow down. The symptoms include facial swelling, hoarseness, brittle hair, rough skin, weight gain, constipation, and discomfort with cold temperatures.

  •     Myeloproliferative disorders
This condition refers to a group of conditions that cause too many white blood cells, red blood cells, or platelets to be produced in your bone marrow. Although rare, this disorder can develop into leukemia, which is white blood cell cancer.

  •     Autoimmune inflammation
This condition occurs when the immune system attacks your own body. Symptoms include inflamed joints, painful bones or joints, fever, hair loss and muscle aches.

  •     Other conditions
Other conditions that can cause an increase in basophil levels in the body such as post-operative splenectomy, collagen vascular disease, and varicella (chickenpox) infections.

In addition, some of the things below can actually make your basophil levels decrease, including:

  •     Infection
This condition occurs when bacteria or other harmful substances enter the injured body part.

  •     Acute hypersensitivity reactions
In this case, your body overreacts to substances in the form of an acute allergic reaction. Symptoms include watery eyes, runny nose, red rashes, and itching. In extreme situations, symptoms can be life threatening. If you have an anaphylactic reaction and can't breathe, emergency medical help is needed.

  •     Hyperthyroidism
An excess of thyroid hormone can cause your body to function to speed up metabolism. Symptoms include increased heart rate, increased blood pressure, excessive sweating, and weight loss.

Various conditions that can cause an increase or decrease in the amount of basophils in the blood need to be handled properly. Blood tests are a way to monitor basophil levels in the body. Therefore, if you feel that your body is not feeling well and are experiencing the cause of a fluctuating basophil level, immediately consult a doctor to get the right treatment.
