May I combine the two sera on one face?

When you have various skin problems, the serum used can actually be of several types. Can I use a combination of two or more serums at once?

Can you use a combination of two facial serums at once?

The serum is different from a moisturizer. According to Dr. Abigail Waldman, lecturer in dermatology at Harvard Medical School, serum formulations are highly concentrated and are designed to quickly seep into the skin.

This allows the serum to work quickly and optimally to deal with your skin problems. So, can I use a combination of two serums at the same time?

Actually it's good. However, its use cannot be arbitrary. Because each serum contains active ingredients, different formulations and reactions on the skin.

Mixing two or more serums carefully, also called stratification, can irritate sensitive skin.

Therefore, you must know very well which products to use. The solution to use several serums at once is to combine the active ingredients contained in them.
How to combine serum safely for many skin problems
Not all serums can be used together. For example, two products containing acids should not be combined because their use will increase the risk of skin irritation.

Besides the active ingredients, another thing to note is the formulation. More liquid serum must be used for perfect absorption. While thicker or oil-containing serum must be used afterwards.

You may not use more than 3 serum products per use. Because too many products can also make absorption not optimal and the risk of irritation is higher.

A combination of two serums that must be avoided

The combined serum must be suitable for your skin problems. But in principle, pay close attention to the active ingredient content. Some ingredients can cause problems if used together, such as:
Vitamin C and retinol
Vitamin C serum acts as an antioxidant that can help fight sun damage and pollutants. In addition, vitamin C also helps cover up brown spots and stimulates collagen production to reduce fine lines.

Meanwhile, retinol and retinoids are derivatives of vitamin A which can hide brown spots and fine lines. However, this active ingredient can make the skin more sensitive to light.

Vitamin C and retinol function optimally only at different pHs. Vitamin C is formulated to have a pH below 3.5, while retinol works best between 5.5 and 6.

Therefore, you must use vitamin C and retinol separately, for example in the morning and evening. Do not use a combination of these two serums at once.
AHA or BHA and retinol

Alpha-hydroxy acid (AHA) and beta-hydroxy-acid (BHA) are compounds used to exfoliate the skin. Both of these active ingredients are also used to flatten complexions.

Retinol is used to treat acne and reduce brown spots, fine lines and wrinkles.

Used together, these two types of active ingredients can cause very dry skin. Very dry skin is not only susceptible to desquamation, but also has redness and irritation.

Therefore, a combination of two sera between AHA and retinol or between BHA and retinol is not recommended. Use only one alternately morning or evening.
Benzoyl peroxide and retinol

Sera that contain benzoyl peroxide and retinol may not be used together. Indeed, the combination of these two products can eliminate the reciprocal effect.
