Metabolic Syndrome

Metabolic Indrom is a medical term that refers to a combination of a number of conditions, namely hypertension (high blood pressure), hyperglycemia (blood sugar levels), high cholesterol (high cholesterol), and obesity, which are experienced simultaneously. Therefore, a person is not considered to suffer from this syndrome if he / she only suffers from one of these conditions.

The condition contained in metabolic syndrome is a risk factor for contracting a serious disease. For example, heart attacks and strokes.

Symptoms of Metabolic Syndrome
Although most metabolic syndromes do not have specific symptoms, a number of clinical signs must be monitored. Among others are:

  • Waist circumference that exceeds normal limits is greater than 80 cm for women and 90 cm for men.
  • Blood pressure is always between 140/90 mmHg and more.
  • Low levels of good cholesterol (HDL) (less than 40 mg / dL in men and 50 mg / dL in women).
  • High levels of triglycerides in the blood, 150 mg / dL or more.
  • Fasting blood glucose increases at 100 mg / dL and above.
  • Sensitive to inflammation, such as swelling and irritation.
  • Increased risk of blood clots, such as deep vein thrombosis or DVT.

A medical examination must be carried out if someone has clinical signs to be treated.

Causes and Risk Factors of Metabolic Syndrome

The main causes of metabolic syndrome are being overweight and underactive lifestyles. This condition is also related to the tendency for some people to develop insulin resistance.

A number of factors can increase the risk of developing metabolic syndrome. These risk factors include:

  • Age. The risk of developing metabolic syndrome will increase with age.
  • Diabetes complications. If you have gestational diabetes (diabetes during pregnancy) or have a family history of type 2 diabetes, the risk of developing metabolic syndrome will also increase.
  • Other diseases, such as polycystic ovary syndrome.

Diagnosis of metabolic syndrome

Metabolic syndrome very rarely causes disturbing symptoms. The only visible physical indication is waist size that exceeds normal limits.

To diagnose this syndrome, a series of tests must be done, usually including blood pressure, body weight, and blood tests to detect the patient's glucose and blood cholesterol levels.
Handling and prevention of metabolic syndrome

A number of simple steps can be taken to treat and prevent metabolic syndrome. These steps include:

  • Exercise regularly.
  • Lose weight to the ideal extent.
  • Stop smoking and consuming alcoholic drinks.
  • Take a healthy and balanced diet.

If the patient's condition does not change even though he has improved his lifestyle through these steps, the doctor will usually give medication to control blood sugar, cholesterol, and blood pressure.
