Navel stools in infants and possible complications

Not all babies are born perfectly. In some cases, babies may have problems with their physical condition, including an enlarged navel or an umbilical hernia.

Umbilical swelling in infants is usually done by parents only when they shower after the umbilical cord is loosened. This disease can be caused by many factors, but it can usually heal itself.

Belly button in the baby

When the baby is born, the umbilical cord no longer provides food, so the abdominal muscles that attach to the umbilical cord will immediately close, but imperfect closure can cause an umbilical hernia in the baby.

Swelling of the umbilical or umbilical hernia is a form of hernia in infants. This condition occurs when the intestine in the body passes through a hole in the baby's abdominal muscles because it is not yet fully closed. This is marked by the appearance of a bulge in the navel of the baby.

Before the baby's umbilical cord is loosened, you may notice that the baby's navel is slightly protruding when it cries. Meanwhile, after the umbilical cord is loosened, you may see a bulge in the baby's navel, also called the navel.

Umbilical hernias usually occur in infants or children under 6 months. Symptoms of an umbilical hernia include:
  • There is a small lump or swelling around the navel
  • The bulge becomes larger and more difficult when the baby cries, coughs or starts pain due to increased pressure on the stomach
  • Under normal circumstances, the protrusion does not feel painful to the touch

During this time, if the bulge changes color or gets bigger, the baby becomes nervous and sick, and nausea and vomiting suddenly, so this can be a sign of danger that you should pay attention to. If your baby has these signs, take them to the doctor immediately. The doctor will conduct an examination and determine the appropriate treatment for your baby.

In most cases, when the baby reaches 2 years of age, the stomach bulges to become normal by itself. However, in some cases, the belly button remains bulging until the fifth year or so.

Causes belly button swelling in the baby

A bulging belly button can happen to everyone, including babies. Some causes of belly button bulging in infants, including:
  • The baby's stomach muscles are not fully covered. This condition can cause bowel discharge until the appearance of a bulge in the navel.
  • Deficiency in babies can also occur if you push your stomach. This condition is caused by a buildup of fluid in the abdominal cavity which causes the baby's stomach and abdomen to swell.
  • The presence of scars, including the formation of excess scars after loosening the umbilical cord, can cause the navel to bulge. Scarring forms a small mass or flesh that develops in the navel (umbilical granuloma).

Not only the cause, there are also risk factors that can increase the risk of swelling in the baby's belly button. These risk factors include premature babies and low birth weight babies. If your baby has the risk factors mentioned above, you must be vigilant.

Complications of navel swelling in infants

You must remember that complications of umbilical hernia or navel swelling in infants are rare because they usually heal autonomously. However, complications can occur when the protruding intestine is trapped and cannot be pushed back into the abdominal cavity.

This condition can reduce blood supply to this part of the intestine, causing pain and tissue damage.

If the part of the intestine that is trapped does not receive blood at all, death and tissue infection can occur. Infection can spread throughout the abdominal cavity and be life threatening.

Complications of umbilical hernia are at a higher risk in adults. However, you should always monitor your baby's navel swelling regularly. So if there are changes, you can immediately see a doctor.

If your baby's belly button doesn't return to normal after 4 years or if he feels bigger and swollen, consult your doctor.

Umbilical hernia or prominent navel surgery may be needed to overcome the problem. This operation involves returning the intestine, which pushes the hole in the abdominal muscles to its original place. You don't need to worry too much because most of the bulging navel is not a dangerous case.
