Newborn Immunization and Haram Vaccine Problems

Happiness, when your child is born, don't make you forget the obligation to look after your baby's health. One way to take care of your baby's health is to vaccinate newborn babies.

Vaccination of two newborns is required, namely poliomyelitis and hepatitis B vaccination.

Definition of vaccination

Immunization is a process in which a person is immunized against infection by giving a vaccine. This vaccine stimulates the immune system which protects a person against possible infection.

Newborn baby vaccination

Vaccination begins immediately after the baby is born. Immunization in newborns is important because it can prevent the onset of disease early.

There are two types of newborn immunization, namely:

1. Hepatitis B

Hepatitis B vaccination should be given to newborns less than 12 hours after birth, outside the thigh. This step was taken to prevent hepatitis B infection in infants.

Referring to the government's immunization schedule, this vaccination will be repeated at the age of 2, 3 and 4 months and usually coincides with the DTP and HiB vaccines which become one or often called the Pentabio vaccine.

Side effects of the hepatitis B vaccine usually manifest as pain, redness and swelling in the area around the injection site that will disappear by itself after two days. Cold water compresses in the area where the injection can be done.

2. Polio

Polio vaccination currently consists of two types. Oral polio vaccine (OPV) and IPV (inactive poliomyelitis vaccine), which are usually injected into the baby's thigh. This immunization prevents polio or paralysis.

According to the government's vaccination schedule, OPV is given at birth of a newborn and is repeated at the age of 2.3 years and 4 months. Whereas IPV is given once with OPV at the age of 4 months.

OPV very rarely causes side effects. After OPV, babies can immediately eat or drink. If vomiting occurs within 30 minutes after immunization, repeat administration.

In administering IPV, side effects can occur in the form of pain, redness and swelling up to two days after vaccination. Cold water compresses can be used to help babies feel comfortable.

What about BCG vaccination?

BCG to prevent TB is also usually given to newborns. This is not wrong and is permitted according to the government calendar and the Indonesian Children's Association (IDAI). However, according to IDAI, BCG vaccination is more effective at 2 to 3 months of age, taking into account the maturity of the immune system against BCG vaccine.

1 month old, can not be immunized newborns

Often a mother comes with a baby over one month and has not been immunized. This usually happens when mothers give birth at home or in other places without the help of health workers such as midwives or doctors.

Can we continue to vaccinate newborns?

Hopefully babies who have not been immunized should be vaccinated with the doctor's approval, depending on the age and condition of the baby. As a definition of vaccination, if you have not received it, the baby does not have an immune system to prevent infection, in this case hepatitis B and polio.

What about premature babies?

In premature babies, newborn vaccinations are usually postponed until the baby is 2 months old.

This vaccine contains pork?

Not. The vaccine does not contain pork. It is true that in making vaccines, especially polio, the enzyme trypsin is needed in pigs. However, during the process, this enzyme will be cleaned for the next process to form a vaccine that does not contain pig enzymes.

Give vaccines on time for your baby's health.
