Red eye medication for children

Eye pain medication is often needed to deal with children's complaints. But don't just choose drugs that hurt your eyes. Treatment of red eye in children must be adjusted to the cause.

Red eye or conjunctivitis is inflammation of the conjunctiva, a transparent layer that protects the inside of the eyelid and the whites of the eye. Inflammation makes blood vessels visible, so the eyes appear red.
Red eye can be caused by viruses and bacteria. Eye pain due to a viral or bacterial infection is very contagious. In addition to infections, red eye in children can also be caused by allergies, such as dust mites, pollen or animal hair, and irritation due to air pollution.

Treat red eye properly

Virus red eyes usually heal without treatment. To help reduce discomfort, you can use cold compresses on the eyes. Meanwhile, red eye due to bacterial infection can be recognized by the flow of yellow eye fluid, making the eyelids sticky and closed, or swollen and crisp.

In such cases, the doctor will give antibiotics in the form of eye drops or ointments. Similarly, if the red eyes that occur are classified as severe or last more than two weeks. There are two types of antibiotics to treat red eye pain that are usually prescribed by doctors: chloramphenicol and fusidic acid.

Chloramphenicol is usually given in the form of eye drops or maybe also in the form of ointments. If chloramphenicol is not right for you, your doctor may prescribe fusidic acid drugs. Especially for children, this drug is preferred because it is not given too often. The same is true for women who are
 older and pregnant.

Chloramphenicol and fusidic acid tend to have side effects, which are tingling or mild pain in the eye for a few moments. It should be noted that both types of eye pain antibiotic drugs must be obtained by a doctor's prescription, including the method of use and recommended dosage.

During this time, red eye caused by allergies must be a trigger to avoid it. Immediately remove the child from this trigger. If children suffer from red eye pain due to allergies, consult a doctor and ask for eye drops to solve the problem. In the case of other allergic reactions, the doctor may prescribe antihistamines or other additional drugs to reduce itching and swelling of the eyes.
