Get to know the two Chikungunya mosquitoes, Aedes Aegypti and Aedes Albopictus
Chikungunya disease is a human disease transmitted by animals (zoonosis). Animals that carry diseases are known as vectors. Specifically for chikungunya disease, this disease vector is Aedes aegepty and Aedes albopticus mosquitoes. Maybe the name of the mosquito is familiar to you, because the mosquito that causes chikungunya turns out to be the same as the one that causes dengue fever (DH), which has many epidemics in Indonesia.
Characteristics of Chikungunya Aedes Aegypti mosquitoes

Aedes aegypti mosquitoes are small in size, with distinctive black and white legs. This mosquito is active throughout the year, with maximum activity from August to October. The Aedes aegypti mosquito originally lived in the forest, precisely in a pond containing a pool of water. However, along with changes in human habitat, Aedes aegypti mosquitoes breed in human settlements, in household containers that may contain water, such as barrels, flower pots, and tires that are not used.

In the room, Aedes aegypti mosquitoes grow well because of rising temperatures. However, adaptation began to occur, so that the Aedes aegypti mosquito began to survive in open space. This could be the cause of the difficulty in eradicating these mosquitoes.

Chikungunya mosquitoes are more commonly found in human settlements, in a radius of less than 100 meters. Adult mosquitoes can not fly more than 400 meters. Although the rainy season supports reproduction of the Aedes aegypti mosquito, its ability to rest and adapt to artificial puddles (such as those found in many places) causes these mosquitoes to reproduce throughout the season. year without being affected by the season.
Characteristics of the Chikungunya Aedes Albopticus mosquito

The Aedes albopticus mosquito may not be so well known as the Aedes aegypti mosquito. But along with the globalization era, the spread of mosquitoes is increasingly widespread. Its more adaptive characteristics make mosquitoes begin to become important vectors of disease in various countries, because with the spread of the Aedes albopticus mosquito, this disease is also widespread.

This mosquito is able to survive in various types of ecosystems, both tropical and subtropical. With global climate change, the earth's temperature warms up, expanding the spread of the Aedes albopticus mosquito. This mosquito also shows good adaptation to colder temperatures, unlike the Aedes aegypti mosquito, which can only survive in hot weather. Aedes Albopticus mosquitoes not only attack humans, but also pets or wild animals, such as reptiles, birds, and amphibians. Physically, this species resembles the Aedes Aegypti mosquito.

The habitat of the Chikungunya mosquito, such as Aedes, is close to human settlements and tends to breed in areas commonly used as water reservoirs, making it difficult to eradicate mosquitoes.
How to prevent the breeding of Chikungunya mosquitoes

Some prevention efforts that you can do to reduce the breeding area of chikungunya mosquitoes inside and outside the room by reducing / eliminating puddles of water:

  • By removing all open water tanks, such as unused plant pots, bottles / waste cans, tires that are not used.
  • Use of larvicide in water tanks.
  • Use a waterproof water tank cap
  • Use mosquito nets or mosquito nets at home

Prevention of mosquito bites is also important. It is important to remember that Aedes mosquitoes are active during the day, inside and outside. Therefore, it is important for you to protect yourself from mosquito bites now. Protection against mosquito bites can be achieved by:

  • Use insect repellent, if possible, sleeveless shirts and pants.
  • Use a mosquito net, especially if you don't have a mosquito net or air conditioner in your home.
  • People with chikungunya must also protect themselves from mosquito bites to prevent transmission to others.
